Study Group 16 (AK16): Aperiodic Crystals

Scheduled events

8th Workshop on Structural Analysis of Aperiodic Crystals   in Bayreuth, Germany  :  First half of 2013

The 8th Workshop on Structural Analysis of Aperiodic Crystals will continue a series of workshops at the University of Bayreuth. Purpose is to present an overview of the methods of structure determination and structural analysis of incommensurately modulated structures and of composite crystals. Lectures will cover the basic principles of the superspace approach as well as recent developments and applications.

In addition, participants will have the opportunity to practice structure determination and refinements in superspace with the computer programs Superflip and Jana2006. With the help of a step–by–step tutorial they will be guided through selected examples for modulated structures and composite crystals.

Past events

7th Workshop on Structural Analysis of Aperiodic Crystals   in Bayreuth, Germany  :  March 17 – 20, 2009

The 32 participants from Armenia (1), Austria (2), Czechia (1), Denmark (2), Estonia (1), Germany (15), Italy (4), Portugal (1), Singapore (1), Sweden (2), Switzerland (1) and the USA (1) received an overview over structral analysis of aperiodic crystals. The first lectures introduced the fundamentals of the superspace approach for description of crystal structures of incommensurately modulated compounds and incommensurate composite crystals. In the following, modern developments were presented, like the method of charge flipping for the ab initio structure solution of periodic and of aperiodic crystals from diffraction data, with which crystal structures of aperiodic crystals can be determined systematically and successfully directly in superspace, the application of the higher–dimensional superspace approach for the simplified and unified description of complex superstructures, the description of magnetic structures within the superspace approach, twinning, and the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) to analyse atomic modulation functions.

An importand part of the workshop was again the working of the participants on the computer. A script with selected examples gave a step by step introduction into the programs Jana2000 and Superflip and into the procedure of structure analysis of aperiodic crystals.

6th Workshop on Structural Analysis of Incommensurate Crystals   in Bayreuth, Germany  :  March 05 – 08, 2009

During the workshop, 31 paticipants from Czechia, Germany, India, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and the USA got an overview of the methods of structure determination and structural analysis of incommensurately modulated structures and incommensurate composite crystals. Lectures have covered the basic principles of the superspace description of modulated structures and of superspace groups, as well as more advanced topics like the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM), Charge flipping, Fourier methods in superspace and crystal chemistry of aperiodic structures.

In addition to the series of lectures in the morning, the participants have had the opportunity in the afternoon to apply the theorie to praxis and to learn/practice the structure refinement of aperiodic structures using the computer programs Jana2006 and Superflip. With the help of a step–by–step tutorial they were guided through selected examples for modulated structures and composite crystals. During these practical trainings, the six lecturers served as tutors.
